The Warren, a stunning stretch of coastline nearby offers circular walking routes that meander through ancient woodlands and along spectacular cliff tops. One of these walks takes you along Revelstoke Drive. To discover the many charms of maritime South Devon in one walk including the waterfront village of Noss Mayo with its chocolate box appeal, you couldn’t find a more stunning route.

Mothecombe beach, a vast stretch of sand at low tide, sheltered and ideal for bathing is a real treat. Rock pools need exploring and the surrounding woodlands and estuary flats burst with birdlife. A real nature lovers dream, unspoilt and untouched.

The village of Noss Mayo is on the south side of the Yealm Estuary with Newton Ferrers to the north. It is well worth a visit to enjoy the lovely views over the estuary, local sailing school and nearby boat hire.

About the Area & History

Newton Ferrers, a drop of tranquillity just 10 miles from the urban conurbation of bustling Plymouth, sits on the banks of the unspoilt Yealm Estuary. Surrounded by ancient woodlands and creeks, and packed with wildlife, it rightly deserves the title of hidden gem. Thatched cottages and a welcoming village pub, make this village a picture postcard idyll. Newton was recorded as such in the Doomsday book and later became Newton Ferrers after the Norman nobleman, ‘Ferrers’.

Newton Ferrers is included within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and many fabulous walks can be taken to appreciate just how beautiful it is. The tranquil Newton Creek, a narrow tidal inlet, offers leisurely days on or off the water.
