It is the ethereal quality of Plymouth born Julie Ellis’s paintings that first strike you. Her hauntingly beautiful oil paintings are on display at The Brownston Gallery in Modbury, in her first major solo exhibition ‘Inner Landscapes’.
Julie graduated in 2015 with a First Class Honours degree in Painting, Drawing and Printmaking from Plymouth College of Art.
Catherine Gillen, at The Brownston Gallery’s Private View, commented: “We first discovered Julie at the end of year graduation show and we were immediately captivated by her huge Turneresque canvases, which literally made us stop in our tracks.”
Introducing the artist, who now paints full time in her studio in Plymouth’s historic Royal William Yard quarter, Catherine expanded: “In Julie’s paintings past and present intermingle in the hazy light, where the tangible remains fleeting and unattainable.”
Prunella Martin, from Marchand Petit’s Prime Waterfront & Country House Department who sponsored the evening, went on to add what an inspiration Julie was to those who dabble with painting but haven’t yet made the time, or leap of faith, to pursue their painting aspirations.
Prunella concluded: “Our atmospheric coastline, rugged moors, winding country lanes and picturesque villages provide an endless source of inspiration not just for artists but for everyone who chooses to live in this scenic part of the Westcountry. Our house buyers are frequently looking for original artwork to hang on their walls and what could be better than local home grown talent.”
Julie’s work is already finding its way into the homes of savvy collectors in the South West, including Michael Caines MBE of Lympstone Manor Hotel, where Julie’s paintings have pride of place.
‘Inner Landscapes’ by Julie Ellis runs from September 15 to October 7. www.thebrownstonegallery.co.uk tel: 01548 831338. Or for further information please contact Marchand Petit’s Modbury office on 01548 831163, email: email@example.com.
