Kingsbridge ‘Swallows & Amazons’ Property Exceeds Expectation at Auction

An estuary-fronted Kingsbridge property reminiscent of that in the Arthur Ransome classic, Swallows & Amazons, has exceeded expectation to sell in excess of its guide price at auction.

A sunny October day saw the Marchand Petit flag flying outside of Whinstones on Embankment Road in Kingsbridge, our auctionee having decided to hold the auction at the property itself in a break from tradition. Interest in Whinstones – guided at £850,000 – was exceptional in the run-up to the auction, even for a property with direct water access, and the event attracted a packed audience of interested parties.

Marchand Petit auctioneer Stuart Cartwright MRICS told a tale of his own years spent raising a family at Whinstones, before opening the bidding at £800,000. Bids quickly moved forward, Stuart’s announcement that the property was on the market and would be sold on the day immediately seeing hands raised in the air. An electric atmosphere saw bidding continue, before the hammer finally came down on a final price well in excess of the guide.

The successful bidder and new owner intends to bring his young family to live at Whinstones, enjoying their very own Swallows & Amazons lifestyle for years to come.

After the auction, Stuart commented that this was another clear example of where an auction can facilitate an efficient sale at the best price achievable on the day.

“The Marchand Petit auction team and our Kingsbridge office, together with Beers Solicitors, pulled together to facilitate a sale within just six weeks,” said the auctioneer.
