The earliest street in Dartmouth to be recorded by name is Smith Street, which dates back to the 13th century. Marchand Petit are delighted to be marketing The Old Bakery, a prominent building in this historical streetscape.
The street name is probably derived from the smiths and shipwrights who built and repaired ships here, when in medieval times the water reached this part of town.
Looking at The Old Bakery, with its evocative facades, it is not hard to imagine the skilled tradesmen collecting their daily bread from the premises, which has a plague on the outside commemorating “Rebuilt 1852, H M Baker, Mayor”
Now a comfortable 4 bedroom property, The Old Bakery has undergone considerable renovation and refurbishment in recent years, yet retains much charm and character.
Period enthusiasts will not be disappointed. Focal points such as the original bread oven remain in the kitchen/breakfast room, the impressive flagstone flooring glistens and the circular staircase is a pleasure to walk up.
The master bedroom suite has a separate staircase that leads up to an adaptable room, ideal as a study, dressing room, fifth bedroom or private second sitting room.
From the kitchen a door leads out onto a small terrace, with steps leading down into St Saviour’s Square.
The property looks onto St Saviour’s Church which was constructed in 1335 and contains an impressive pre-Reformation oak rood screen and a large medieval ironwork door decorated with two leopards of the Plantagenets. It is reputed that the gallery of the church is constructed from timbers off ships captured during the defeat of the Spanish Armanda.
The Old Bakery can trace its historical roots and was a fundamental building in this strategic deep-water port, home to Britannia Royal Naval College. Ideal for house hunters looking for period charm and modern-day comforts.
The Old Bakery is offered for sale at £450,000. For further information please contact Marchand Petit’s Dartmouth office on 01803 839190, email firstname.lastname@example.org.
