Thurlestone is a popular village with its own primary school, general stores, pub, hotel with leisure facilities and church, but it is most famous for its fine 18 hole links golf course, its sandy beaches and beautiful walks along the South Devon coastal path. The parish takes its name from the big rock arch jutting up from the sea off Thurlestone Sands. Thorl in Anglo Saxon meant a nostril or a hole and Stan was a stone, so the name appears in the Domesday Book as Thorlestan. The nearby market town of Kingsbridge provides a good range of shops, a health centre, leisure centre with indoor swimming pool, library, schools and churches.
From Kingsbridge take the A381 towards Salcombe and continue through the village of West Alvington. After about half a mile turn right and right again, following signs for Thurlestone. Continue for a further half a mile turning left signed Thurlestone. Follow this road and on entering the village turn left into Court Road signed Kerse, continue down this road and on passing over the cattle grid take the second turning right. Towards the end of this road turn into Meadfoot and No 5 will be found at the end of the cul-de-sac on the left.
