Description and Situation
Point House originated as a farmhouse on Lord Revelstoke's historic Baring estate, with parts of the building dating back to the 17th century. Noss Mayo and Newton Ferrers have expanded, but many of the original estate buildings remain, giving great character to the estuary. Over the last two years the house has undergone a comprehensive programme of updating, refitting and refurbishment to exacting standards resulting in a house of immense appeal. The work has also included the gardens where the fabulous waterside terraces, lawns and raised beds are instantly inviting. To the rear the garden rises into the woodland, where an upper terrace and tree house have been created.
The twin villages of Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo straddle the Yealm Estuary and Point House is in a strategic position where the river adjoins the creek running up to Noss Hard. This outstandingly beautiful location provides much of the accommodation and the wonderful garden and terrace areas with captivating views in several directions, that vary with the tide and the season.
Long walks are available from the doorstep, along the estuary and around the National Trust headland of The Warren. Both The Ship and The Swan inns are a short walk away, and there are well cared for tennis courts and a community hall in the village. Newton Ferrers has a range of facilities including a shop, post office, pharmacist, butcher's shop and a primary school, while more comprehensive amenities are to be found in nearby Yealmpton, Modbury, Ivybridge and Plymouth. Deep water moorings are administered by the River Yealm Harbour Authority. Slipway facilities are located around the Estuary.
The villages thrive throughout the year with many community activities, yacht club and a number of lively U3A groups. Dartmoor National Park is just a short distance away and nearby are several golf courses. The historic and vibrant city of Plymouth is within 25 minutes' drive. The city also includes a large university with a number of world class faculties and both medical and dental schools. The outstanding Theatre Royal has a national reputation with many West End shows starting here. A regular train service to both London and the north runs via the city and Totnes, and Brittany Ferries link Plymouth to Roscoff in Brittany and Santander in Northern Spain.
Steps lead down from the front garden to the waterfront with its own outhaul mooring. Access to the water is subject to the Harbour Authority regulations.
Mains water, drainage, gas and electricity. Gas-fired central heating.
