Storybook Homes to Fall in Love With

Storybook Homes to Fall in Love With hero

Full of whimsy and nostalgia, there’s something deeply visceral when we think back to the stories we read as children. Whether you were reading of hobbit holes and grand adventures, thatched cottages with porridge waiting on the table, or classic country estates housing mysterious wardrobes, we perhaps never expected to find them in real life, and yet here they are (albeit, minus the portal to Narnia!).

These storybook homes had to be based on real-life places, and some are genuinely reminiscent of the types of homes we see dotted around our South Devon rural villages and coastal communities.

In honour of World Book Day on the 5th March, we’re rounding up our favourite storybook homes; the ones that ooze sentimentality with their ceiling trusses, wildflower meadows, and stone walls. The kind that you imagine would fit perfectly within your favourite childhood novel.

Home with modern and victorian gothic architecture with a gravel garden, wildflower meadow and blue sky behind

The Lodge, Ringmore

A home that fuses period charm with contemporary design, The Lodge is an incredibly romantic Victorian gatehouse that enjoys the rural views of Ringmore from every room. Original Gothic-arched windows frame the glorious pastoral landscape outside, whispering stories of past lives lived here, whilst the wildflower meadow and greenery beyond could very well be the setting of a Winnie-the-Pooh adventure.

stone farmhouse with sash windows draped in wisteria and fronted by a stone wall and iron gate

Lower Easton Farmhouse, Kingsbridge

Delightfully idyllic, entered via a wrought iron gate along flagstone paving and draped in wisteria, Lower Easton Farmhouse is a handsome example of a mid-17th century home. Having been lovingly renovated and modernised for family living, the Grade-II listed property still retains many of its original character features; exposed beams and stone walls are not just an aesthetic, they preserve the home’s history. Large sash windows along the front of the house allow sunlight to dapple in, and an inglenook fireplace with timber inlet, bread oven, and flagstone hearth keeps things night and toasty during colder days. Classic farmhouses such as this are redolent of those you might have read about in classic novels such as Wuthering Heights or Lark Rise to Candleford.

Large white farmhouse with grey roof, set in large grounds that are surrounded by woodland with a green lawn and wildflower patch

Home Farm, Moreleigh

Hidden down country lanes, surrounded by woodland and sitting in luscious gardens, Home Farm is a classic country home that feels utterly secluded. Inside, the home sings of character with a stone fireplace and long burner, a farmhouse-style kitchen and Aga, window seats, and flagstone flooring. Outside, the garden and wildflower lawn could have been plucked from a Beatrix Potter novel; the perfect place to enjoy a picnic with cucumber sandwiches and a flask of hot tea, whilst being engulfed by the sweet smell of lavender and thyme.

Sea View, Ringmore

There’s more than what meets the eye with Sea View. From the outside, you see a quaint thatched cottage, with painted casement window frames and a porch; the type of home you might find described in an Enid Blyton book. But the rear of the property is a complete juxtaposition with a sleek and modern extension with large floor-to-ceiling windows and doors that let light pour into the beautifully presented home. Sea View completely reframes what it is to modernise a home, blending the neat curvature of original stone walls and wooden ceiling beams with a contemporary open-plan kitchen and bi-folding doors that allow the lines between the inside and out to blur. It’s a home that sits on opposite ends of the spectrum, and it works seamlessly.

Quaint stone cottage surrounded by flowers and greenery

Fisherbeck, Woodleigh

Much like the cottage inhabited by Miss Honey in Matilda by Roald Dahl, this enchanting home feels as though it has been gently settled into its surroundings rather than built upon them. There’s the same sense of quiet refuge; a place tucked away from the rush of the world, where simplicity reigns and comfort is found in honest materials and warm corners. You can easily imagine Miss Honey herself stepping through the door, pausing to admire the garden before putting the kettle on. It’s the unpretentious charm that makes it so special; the feeling that life here would be measured not in grand gestures but in small, meaningful moments.

Garden lake surrounded by greenery with house tucked away in the background

Western Waters, Bugford

Imagine stepping into a home plucked from the pages of The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The grand, yet welcoming proportions and lovingly tended grounds suggest hidden corners waiting to be discovered, where child-like wonder may lead us to stumble upon a secret nook, a sun-dappled terrace, or a whisper of adventure in the gardens. It’s the kind of place where curiosity is rewarded, and every doorway and window frame seems to hint at stories past and yet to come. There’s a gentle charm and sense of wonder here that makes this house feel like a living fairytale, stately enough to inspire awe, but intimate enough to feel like home.

white thatched cottage with front patio and wooden gate with a glimps of Malborough village behind

Shute House, Malborough

Stepping into this adorable cottage feels as though you’ve wandered into The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, minus the mischievous weasels but with all the riverside whimsy intact. With cosy nooks, a crackling fireplace and a garden that could easily be Mole’s secret spot for afternoon tea (complete with an orchard ripe for picnics), the house embodies that same sense of pastoral calm and bucolic delight. Just as Mole and Ratty found comfort and joy in simple pleasures by the water’s edge, this cottage invites its occupants to slow down, watch the seasons turn and enjoy every apple blossom and sunset through the window. It’s not just a home, it’s a place where a storybook life feels not only possible but natural; a cosy chapter tucked away in the South Hams countryside.

These storybook homes remind us that magic doesn’t just live in the pages of our favourite novels; it can be found in the nooks, beams, and gardens of real-life homes across South Devon. Whether you’re drawn to the cosy charm of a riverside cottage, the grandeur of a secret garden estate, or the quiet refuge of a countryside farmhouse, each property tells its own story, waiting for the next chapter to be written by you.
