A Thriving Village at the Heart of the Yealm
Just three miles from the coast and a short drive from Plymouth, Yealmpton is a quintessential English parish that combines the simplicity of village life with a strong sense of community and stunning natural surroundings.
A Guide to Yealmpton
Well-equipped and welcoming, Yealmpton offers everything a family or individual could need on the doorstep, while some of South Devon’s finest beaches, moorland, and market towns are within easy reach. In short, it’s a place that rewards those who discover it.
Rooted in Saxon history and taking its name from the River Yealm, the village grew through the medieval period as a market town and agricultural hub, its character shaped by the grand estates of Kitley, Lyneham and Bowden that still define the parish today. The Grade I listed Church of St. Bartholomew stands as a striking reminder of the village's enduring heritage, while a 400-year-old stone cottage, thought to be where an old nursery rhyme was written, adds a touch of whimsy.
Things to do in Yealmpton
For walkers, Yealmpton is a tranquil paradise. The village sits at the heart of an extensive network of footpaths and trails suitable for all abilities. The Kitley Caves Loop is a local favourite, winding through beautiful woodland alongside the Yealm estuary to the remarkable limestone caves, once a show cave open to the public, and still worth the walk to peer through the gate and see the quarry where the rare Kitley Green Marble was hewn. A piece of this marble can be found today in the Natural History Museum in London. For something more challenging, a section of the Two Moors Way passes through the area, linking Dartmoor to the coast and offering walkers a true sense of the South West’s diverse landscape.
The surrounding coastline is equally breathtaking. Mothecombe, tucked within the private Flete Estate and open to the public on select days, is one of Devon’s most beautiful and unspoiled beaches – a rewarding destination for those who seek it out. Wembury is another local treasure, managed by the National Trust and especially popular for sunny days, rockpooling and looking for marine life. For a calmer experience, the River Yealm provides the perfect setting for a leisurely afternoon, with Cellar Beach at Newton Ferrers offering a peaceful, sheltered spot on the water’s edge.
The Yealmpton Agricultural Show is a highlight of the local calendar, attracting families, farmers, and visitors from across the South Hams each year. Featuring livestock competitions, traditional crafts, local food and drink, and plenty of entertainment for children, it encapsulates everything that makes this corner of Devon so proud of its rural heritage.
Further afield, Plymouth, Britain’s Ocean City, is just a short drive away and full of opportunities. Stroll along the Hoe Promenade and imagine Sir Francis Drake finishing his game of bowls as the Spanish Armada approached. Wander the cobbled streets of the Elizabethan Barbican, enjoy a drink at a waterside café or seafood restaurant beside the harbour, or explore the wonders of the deep at the National Marine Aquarium. Check what’s on at Plymouth’s Theatre Royal or The Box, the city’s flagship museum and gallery. Dartmoor National Park, meanwhile, is equally accessible, a vast and ancient landscape of granite tors, wild ponies, and open skies that never fails to inspire.
Places to eat in Yealmpton
Ben’s Farm Shop is a village institution, celebrated across the South Hams for its quality local produce, thoughtfully sourced meats, and the warm, unhurried atmosphere that keeps people returning week after week. It’s a place that reminds you why shopping locally matters.
For a relaxed bite with friends, Nelli’s Village Café is the spot - a friendly, unpretentious place where the coffee is good and the welcome genuine. For something a little different, Ming’s Chinese Restaurant, affectionately known to locals as Old Mother Hubbard, after the nursery rhyme that originates here in Yealmpton, is a longstanding favourite with its own unique atmosphere, quite possibly the only Chinese restaurant in England housed in a 16th-century Devon longhouse.
A short drive brings you to the cluster of waterside pubs and eateries around Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo, which together make for one of the finest lunch destinations in the South Hams. The Green is a lovely choice for a laid-back lunch or dinner, with views across the estuary that more than justify the short drive. For something more substantial, both villages reward exploration, with fresh fish delivered daily from Plymouth and Brixham markets, locally reared Dartmoor meats, and the kind of unhurried estuary views that make it very easy to linger well beyond pudding.

The Rose & Crown is at the heart of village life in Yealmpton. A proper local pub in every sense, it serves hearty meals, maintains a solid selection of ales, and acts as the social hub it has always been – equally welcoming to regulars and newcomers, dog owners and families. On a cold evening, it’s one of the best places in the South Hams.
A few miles down the road, the trio of waterside pubs at Newton Ferrers and Noss Mayo are well worth the detour, especially in summer, when the estuary views and the sound of water create a near-perfect atmosphere. The Ship Inn in Noss Mayo is an award-winning pub with a particular passion for fresh fish and a cellar stocked with regional ales, including beers from Noss Beer Works just down the road. The Swan Inn, opposite Pope’s Quay, is a family-run pub specialising in fish dishes, with daily deliveries from the fish market and a beer garden overlooking the estuary. Across the creek in Newton Ferrers, The Dolphin Inn is a family- and dog-friendly free house with estuary views from its outside seating, serving traditional pub food and a wide range of ales, bitters, lagers, and ciders. The three pubs are connected by ancient tidal causeways – just mind the tide times.
