About this property

A beautiful Grade II listed manor house of mediaeval origins situated in a superb setting, with landscaped gardens and outbuildings, located in a prime position on the Wood Barton Estate.

The history of Fortescue Manor has been documented back as far as 1068. The Fortescue family were first in residence in 1426 and remained until 1667. Over the centuries the house has seen many structural changes, the last major alterations having taken place some two hundred years ago when elegant Georgian windows were fitted to the westside of the Manor. In the present restoration under the guidance of architectural historian Robert Waterhouse, significant features have been highlighted including the 13th century carved granite internal door frame and the 16th century carved granite external entrance door frame and hallway with elegant mullioned window surrounds.

Fortescue Manor has accommodation on two floors extending to over 3,650 sq.ft. It has been fitted out and finished to the highest standards. Floors are of slate flagstone in the hall, drawing room, cloakroom and utility room, whilst reclaimed pitch pine has been used throughout the rest of the house. There are fine fireplaces in the drawing room and study. The kitchen fittings are custom built with old oak doors and granite work tops. it also includes a four oven AGA.

In addition to the private gardens, the owners will have the use of 90 acres of estate grounds. It is a five minute walk to the river, with it's clear running water home to sea trout, brown trout and salmon. A railway known as the Bluebell Line used to pass through this lovely valley, but all that remains is an embankment and a superb 19th century stone bridge crossing the river.

For the equestrian family stabling can also be purchased with Fortescue Manor and there is ample grazing land available within the grounds. These facilities can be provided by separate negotiation, if required.

Woodleigh is an attractive village with a good community and excellent communications to Totnes, Kingsbridge and the A38 Devon Expressway. The settlement dates back to Norman times and is mentioned in the Domesday Book. It encompasses land designated as being of outstanding natural beauty and is adjacent to the River Avon. Much of the surrounding woodland is owned and managed by the Woodland Trust and therefore offers beautiful river and woodland walks. Within a mile of the property are the popular Avon Mill Garden Centre with deli, cafe and the Aune Valley Farm Shop with its newly opened Cafe. Also, close by is the village of Loddiswell which has a primary school, shops and pub. Kingsbridge, just over 3 miles to the south and provides a more extensive range of shops and facilities.

Within a short drive of Wood Barton is South Devon's magnificent coastline with some of the most lovely beaches, beautiful estuaries and clifftop walks, whilst to the north lies the rugged grandeur and wide open spaces of Dartmoor National Park.
