From Dartmouth follow the A3122 towards
Kingsbridge. At the BP garage in Halwell turn
left signposted Kingsbridge. One mile after the
BP garage turn left for Slapton/East Allington/
The Tower Inn. Drive for about four miles on
this lane, known locally as Five Mile Lane. It’s
narrow in places and there are passing places.
All the signposts at crossroads have the name of
the junction written vertically on the post. At
Buckland Cross turn left, it’s signposted Gara
Mill. After about 50 metres, turn right by the
third telegraph pole into a narrow unmarked
lane by a metal gate. After another 500 metres
you reach a T-junction where you’ll see a house
called Merrifield on your left. This is Merrifield
Cross. Go straight ahead on the lane, past the
two signs; one symbolises a dead end, the other
reads No Through Road After A Mile. This lane
is narrow and twisting and dips up and down.
Follow it for about one and a half miles, past
Hansel Cottage and between the walls of the
hamlet of Hansel, around the sharp left bend
and down to the river. The last part of the lane
is pretty rural; keep faith and keep going until
you see a Mill House and a river!
